Fish are the most important part of aquaponics without them it would just be a hydroponic system dependent on chemicals to set the ph and feed levels. I am often asked about the fish in our system and if they have to be a special type of fish.

The fish in our tank are currently just simple gold fish. we are planing to make a switch to Tilapia and raise them for food in the near future adding another source of food production to the vertical farm.

Any type of freshwater fish can be used in an aquaponic system. It really depends on your local climate and what you what to do. if you plan to eat the fish then a variety such as Tilapia or perch would be a good choice where as if you just want to have fish for ornamental purposes goldfish or koi carp would do the job.

Nile Tilapia oreochromis Niloticus

The Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) has become the most popular fish used in aquaponics. it is a fast growing fish that produces a large quantity of waste. they are known as " The Chicken of the Sea" as they are high in protein and can be raised quickly at low cost being ready for harvest from 6 months or 500g in weight. and like to live at a temperature suitable to most plants.

other popular edible varieties include; Carp, Perch and Trout. as they all like to live in conditions that are suitable for plants to grow in and not being too fussy or high maintenance.
